Are you planning on moving to San Antonio, TX? Then you’re in luck: If you love watching plays, listening to bands live, and going to comedy shows, you’ll have your pick of fantastic performance venues across the city. Here are some favorite places to watch live performances in San Antonio.
Tobin Center for the Performing Arts
There’s always a show at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Housed in a stunning historic building — once the city’s municipal auditorium — along the banks of the San Antonio River, the TCPA is the heart of downtown. There are three performance venues inside.
With more than 1,700 seats, the design of the H-E-B Performance Hall means flexibility to host almost any type of event, from banquets to cabarets and plays to concerts. The Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater offers a black-box studio experience that seats up to 300 audience members in varying configurations. At the same time, the outdoor Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza venue is perfect for concerts, festivals, and cinema.
Public Theater of San Antonio
At the Public Theater of San Antonio, you’ll find a diverse selection of shows and events, all focusing on making the arts accessible to all San Antonians. The historic San Pedro Playhouse has stood since 1929 in the country’s second-oldest park, San Pedro Springs Park, TX.
The theater is home to two performance spaces: The Cellar Theater is an intimate, black-box space with seating for 60, while the Russell Hill Rogers Theater holds 350 audience members with a traditional stage set-up. The schedule is packed with plays, spoken word, and musical performances throughout the year.
Aztec Theatre
It’s easy to see why critics describe the Aztec Theatre as a “fine arts gem.” The building itself is part of the attraction; since it opened its doors in 1926, the theater has been considered one of the most decorative examples of Meso-American architecture in the U.S.
Decor and artifacts from the theater’s history have been carefully preserved. Today, you can see a mariachi band, watch a ballet recital, take in a film festival, or watch stand-up comedians. There’s always something on stage at the Aztec.
Fitzgerald’s Bar and Live Music Venue
Local hangout Fitzgerald’s Bar and Live Music Venue is the perfect place to dance to your favorite band or DJ and discover new ones.
The dance floor is packed with a full calendar of cover bands, local and regional artists, homegrown legends, and national acts.
Past performers include Lita Ford, Ace Frehley, John Coarbi, and many more. You can even get your own 15 minutes of fame at the Open Mic Night; this regular event lets you perform solo, with your own band, or with the house backup band several nights a week. Other regular events include Veterans Nights and Blue Mondays, which feature jam sessions with professional musicians.
